About the Lone Star Community
The Society for Technical Communication (STC) is the world's largest professional organization for people involved in technical communication. The Lone Star community (LSC) is one of the largest communities in the U.S., drawing members from all over the Dallas- Fort Worth Metroplex area.
We are writers, editors, graphic artists, web content managers, as well as usability experts, consultants, information managers, educators and students. We work in many industries including telecommunications, software, semiconductor, financial, medical, and transportation. The community provides leadership and direction for more than 350 members and promotes professional growth through meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, mentoring, and networking.
Administrative Council
An administrative council manages the LSC. The seven elected officers are the sole voting members with committee managers reporting to the council.
The Council abides by the LSC and Society Bylaws. The Lone Star community exists under its charter from the Society and operates within the Society's policies. The LSC Bylaws and amendments to them are compatible with the Society's Bylaws and its operating policies.
The LSC Administrative Council typically meets at 6:15 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the La Madeleine in Addison, 5290 Belt Line Road, Suite 112, Addison, TX 75240, 972-239-9051. To verify the exact meeting schedule each month, please contact the President or the Vice President.
Council meetings are open to all LSC members. Contact the officers or committee managers when you have questions or comments.

Committee |
Description | | Community Service |
The goal of the Community Service Committee is to involve Lone Star members in community service activities in the Metroplex. It's our opportunity to "give back" to the community and take part in a variety of events. | | Competitions |
The Competitions Committee volunteers work to engage members and non-members in online, art, and technical publications competition. Volunteers may assist with the adminsitration of the competition or judge entries. | | Education |
The Education Committee organizes workshops and other educational events to offer the LSC membership an opportunity to learn new skills. | | Hospitality |
The Hospitality Committee volunteers greet members, guests, and speakers at each monthly dinner meeting. When this committee registers people, they collect money from those who did not pay online and give all attendees name tags to facilitate networking. Frequently people with specific questions are directed to those who are believed to have the answers and the committee volunteers just try to help people with all general questions and concerns. | | Job Bank |
The Job Bank volunteers are responsible for collecting names of companies that hire technical communicators in the metroplex and for networking with company recruiters to ensure that all are aware of our job bank servicing the members of our community. | | Membership | To become a member of the Society for Technical Communication, you need only be actively engaged in some aspect of technical communication or be interested in the arts and sciences of technical communication or allied fields. See Membership for more information. | | Mentoring | Sharing knowledge with others is a vital part of both learning and helping the profession grow. LSC offers a mentoring project that focuses on promoting effective communication, professionalism, and growth. The goal of the Mentoring Project is to pair experienced technical communicators with students and new technical communicators seeking employment in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
If you would like to serve as a mentor, would like to have a mentor, or would like more information, contact the Mentoring Committee Manager. | | Newsletter | | | Public Relations | The Public Relations Committee regularly writes and distributes monthly press releases and Technically Write articles regarding LSC meetings and special events. Committee volunteers create posters, flyers, and brochures for other committees and constantly try to expand the committee contacts and LSC visibility in the North Texas area. | | Scholarship | In Webster's College Dictionary, the first definition of scholarship is this one: a grant-in-aid to a student (as by a college or foundation). Lone Star community has been acting as that college or foundation for several years to help students in the technical communications community. The community awards scholarships annually. See Scholarships for more information and the application procedure. | | Volunteering | This committee oversees the collection of volunteer names and contact information and disburses this information to different committees needing assistance. | | Web | This committee oversees the LSC Web site and is responsible for design, development, and maintenance of the pages and content as well as all technical issues. |
