New Member Spotlight

This month, I got to know a little more about two of our newest members, Katie Wilson and Susan Adkins.

Katie Wilson says, “I'm a student at the University of North Texas (UNT). I will graduate with a bachelor's in English Literature in December, and I will begin working on my master's in technical writing in January.” Katie discovered STC during a class project for Vicki Peake's technical writing class. As many of you know, students have been involved in contests to revamp the LSC newsletter and Web site. Katie’s class worked on the newsletter redesign for part of the semester, interfacing with our immediate past president, Mel Haughton, and Jackie Damrau, the Technically Write managing editor. Katie’s experience encouraged her to become a part of STC. Besides attending school, Katie also works for the Institutional Research and Accreditation department at UNT doing research and writing reports, which she finds “very exciting.” By way of sharing something more personal, Katie says, “I currently only have 27 channels on my television, so I have become addicted to watching CSPAN, which is probably more odd than interesting, but there you go.”

Susan Adkins, another new member, in a recent email shared, “I just completed my last semester of coursework towards a master's degree in technical communications at the University of North Texas.” Susan will take her master's exam in February and hopes to "walk" in May. By the way, Susan also received her undergraduate degree at UNT in English Literature with a minor in Spanish. She has interned as a technical writer at a firm in New York City for the past few summers, and she reports that this was a great experience. Susan has also worked as a paralegal at an Austin, Texas law firm and as a research assistant to a proposal writer in Waco, Texas, which is where she presently lives. She chose to join STC because, “It is highly regarded in the field of technical communications, and I wanted to be a part of such an organization.” In addition, Susan is interested in networking and opportunities to learn more about technical communications.

Besides Susan and Katie, we welcome new members:

  • Jacqueline Chamberlain
  • Robert Vaughan

Extend a warm welcome to these new members when you meet them at an upcoming monthly meeting.

SIN SIG (Shy, Inactive, and New)

SIN SIG will not meet in January (which is the annual Awards Banquet). Please join us in February! SIN SIG is a great way to network before the meeting and learn more about our community.

What Happens at SIN SIG? During the December meeting, Jackie Damrau spoke with us about the Technically Write newsletter. Jackie is actively looking for contributors. If you are interested in submitting an article for Technically Write, contact Jackie by e-mail: newsletter@stc-dfw.org.

Besides Jackie’s visit, Elisa Miller also joined us. She is our current first vice president and program manager. Elisa shared her history with STC and extended a warm welcome to all the attendees.
