LSC Membership Minute
by Jeanne Foster, Manager, Membership and SIN SIG
Consider Yourself Invited! Don’t be bashful. Consider yourself invited to the Shy, Inactive, and New Special Interest Group (SIN SIG) meeting. It’s not just for newcomers. And you don’t have to arrive on time. The monthly SIN SIG meeting is an opportunity for all of us to network before the meeting begins.
Networking makes me think of visiting, and visiting makes me think of a basset hound I once had. His name was Sherman. If we left the gate open, Sherman would just go visiting. I wouldn’t call it running away from home. He wasn’t that fast. And he really didn’t seem to have any particular destination in mind.
Now, Sherman wasn’t a very bashful kind of guy. He considered
himself invited no matter where he went. When he got done wandering,
he’d just go up to someone’s door and wait to be let in.
He might even give a mournful “howdy” howl. And more often
than not, people would let him in. I suspect they would have kept him
if it hadn’t been for some of his bad habits. (There was a close
call with a neighbor’s roast that was fresh out of the oven, waiting
to be carved.) So learn a lesson from Sherman. Consider yourself
invited! (But leave the roast alone.)
What Happens at SIN SIG? During the September meeting, our small group gathered and shared a little about ourselves, followed by Kathryn Poe visiting with us to talk about LSC competitions. As some of our seasoned members drifted over and joined us, those who were drawn in also contributed their thoughts about competitions and competition experiences. In addition, Mike Hiatt (Parliamentarian) and Chris LaPorte (Treasurer) joined us to represent the LSC Admin Council.
Plan Ahead. Before the October 4 th LSC meeting, we will once again meet at 5:45 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dallas-Addison. This month, our guest of honor is Rob Carr Harris. Rob will share information about traditional education and continuing education scholarships.
Farewell and Welcome. We bid farewell to Vivian Ivey Jones who relocated to New Mexico, and we welcome a new member, Michael Rudnicki. Mike has seven years of experience as a technical writer, all at Tektronix (formerly Inet). He was an STC LSC member a few years ago and has now rejoined our community. (Mike initially joined STC as a student while taking continuing education classes at Richland College.) When you meet Mike in person, please give him a hearty “welcome back!”
We Miss You! When my kids were little and Sherman “went visiting,” I’d load up the wagon and off we’d go, up and down the streets of the neighborhood yelling, “ Sherman! Sherman!” We always got him back one way or another. And now here I am again, searching for our lost ones. I’m not loading up the wagon or calling, “ Sherman! Sherman!” But I am asking you to let us know if you have found the following members who seem to have wandered off.
