Dear STC Members,
For some time, STC has recognized the need to change to meet the needs of our members in the 21st century. The expanding scope of our work as technical communicators, the changing nature of volunteerism, the impact of technology on how we interact, and the effects of a global economy—all these factors, and more, have brought us to a place where some of the ways we used to do things just simply don't work as well.
As this year's Society president, I have the privilege of working with a gifted team chosen to lead the transformation initiative and develop recommendations for changes in how the Society runs. The plan is to develop an organizational model that will serve STC members well into the future, that will expand to both include and go beyond the strong foundation provided by our chapter organization into "communities of practice" that take into account the specialty areas of STC members' work.
Articles in Intercom by Roger Grice, assistant to the president for Outreach, will provide some information about the concepts the STC board is considering. The board would also like to invite you to share your thoughts, ideas, and concerns about what STC might look like in the future at our blog at http://trans4mation.typepad.com. We'll use the blog to post our progress. We'll also use it to hear some of your thoughts. Of course, given the nature of a blog, we won't be able to respond to every comment, but we will be looking for the trends in opinions and concerns.
This will be our first experiment with a blog-- so we'll be modifying things as we go to make sure we get it right. Thank you for your continued involvement and interest in STC.
Thea Teich
STC President
