Poe's Prose: The Year of Living Dangerously

By Kathryn Poe

Kathryn PoeWell here it is, folks: my final column. It has been quite a year for me, particularly with such an auspicious beginning. How many people can say they have had a coronation? This year has been memorable for so many reasons, most of them good ones. There is a Chinese curse that says, "May you live in interesting times." I believe that we have definitely had an interesting year and I think things will continue to get better from here. I do hope that the market continues to pick up and we all find ourselves in that wonderful place where jobs grow on trees and rates are high again.

As you might expect, I did not get here alone, nor did I function as LSC President in a vacuum. There are many people I'd like to thank for making this year an entertaining and successful one. Let me begin with a hearty "Thank You" to the entire administrative council for making this year fun, even when it got stressful. Kudos to incoming President Debbie Wiles who was always quietly supportive unless the situation called for more. Debbie is a jewel and I look forward to her tenure as "Big Cheese." Thanks to Past President Michelle Knoerzer for always watching my back and keeping track of how many balls I had in the air at any given time, even when I didn't. Second VP Jackie Damrau provided ideas and energy when mine were running low, and the word "can't" seems to be missing from her vocabulary. Conference roomie and "please tell me why we do it this way" honors go to Beth Bailey. Beth always listened patiently to my ranting and then reminded me that things always work out in the long run. Major props to my illustrious teammates at Beal Bank, Jeff Delanty and Traci Goldsberry, for being great sounding boards and proofreading every column I wrote this year. You two are the best and, boy howdy, does this team rock! Thanks to Jim Chambless for an occasional adjustment to my perspective when things got entertaining.

In closing, it has been a pleasure to be your president, mouthpiece, traffic cop, and figurehead for the past year. As I slide into the Past President position for next year, please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help you. I will still be around, so don't be strangers. Let's start looking forward now. We never know what is coming but it is always fun to find out!

Now let me leave you with my favorite lyric of all time:

"I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me,
or am I even in its mind at all?
Perhaps I'll get a chance to look ahead and see,
soon as I find myself a crystal ball."
