Poe's Prose: Rolling with the Changes

By Kathryn Poe

Kathryn PoeMy trusty desk dictionary defines change this way: to make or become different, alter or replace with another. I don't know too many folks who enjoy change. Sometimes I think we simply fear that which is unknown to us, but the unknown is not always a bad thing. I try to think of change as a potential surprise. (Usually a good surprise at that.) You can make change happen in the Lone Star Chapter any time you like by getting involved.

Change in Action

I met a young lady at the region 5 conference from a sister chapter down south. She was complaining that the programs they were running did not seem to apply to what she actually did for a living. I suggested to her to do something to change this and volunteer to speak about some topic relevant to what she really does. I am pleased to report that she did just that and will be giving a presentation for her chapter in the next couple of months. She will gain presentation skills and her chapter gets a fresh face with new ideas. This way everybody wins!

Change in the LSC

At this midpoint in the program year we have a few changes within the LSC. After several months of effort to get the ball rolling, Fort Worth Satellite manager Julie Bengston will be handing her duties off to Brian McCarthy. We thank her for her efforts and wish her well. We will wait and see what interesting things Brian has in store for the satellite in the coming year.

There is a Chinese curse that says, "May you live in interesting times." It has been an interesting program year for 1st VP Debbie Wiles, but she is hanging on and doing a grand job of rolling with the changes. We were all disappointed that Andrea Ames could not be here in November as scheduled, but so was Andrea. There are still a few things in this world you can not escape and sitting on a federal grand jury is one of them. We wish Andrea well and hope to get her back on next year's program list.

The Lesson

Let me encourage you to make a change by getting involved. Is there something you want to see in the Lone Star Chapter that is new or different? Let us know and dive on in, the water is fine. You can start at the shallow end, I promise. There are opportunities that take an hour or a day. Contact our illustrious Past President Michelle Knoerzer for a list (mknoerzerlsc@aol.com). The board and administrative counsel are here to make this endeavor worth something to you. I know I have said this before but it is true. When you participate in something, you get more out of it in the end.

Here endeth the lesson.
