On August 10, 2002, I realized several goals that would have been difficult to realize without the support of the STC Lone Star Chapter. These goals were a Master's degree in Technical Writing from the University of North Texas, confidence in my work, and the beginning of the career that I had long dreamed of.
When I graduated from Baylor University in 1991, I promised myself I would return to school and complete a Master's degree in a discipline that would support the career of my dreams. Work and financial constraints allowed me the time to discover my passion but delayed my dream for 11 years. Finally, just over 2 years ago, I left my stable job on a completely different career path and enjoyed an interesting series of full-time technical writing-related jobs while I attended classes in the evening. The Lone Star Chapter scholarship money I received for the Spring and Summer 2002 semesters allowed me to work fewer hours and took away much of the financial strain. The chapter helped me over the financial hump when I questioned whether my goal was worth the cost.
The scholarships gave me much more than a piece of paper to hang on my wall. Submitting my applications created confidence in my work, and then receiving the scholarship cemented that confidence. As I completed the applications, I had to examine my goals as a technical writer and the work that I had produced for my classes. When I replaced the early samples from my portfolio with more recent, and greatly improved, samples, I realized that rather than working toward becoming technical writer, I had become a technical writer. When Marian Blake notified me that I received the scholarship, my confidence was boosted even more. Because the group of professionals I aspire to join had the confidence in me to support my goal, I knew that I would reach my goal.
My favorite quote is from Thoreau, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams." The Lone Star Chapter allowed me to move from a tentative walk to a confident run toward becoming a technical writer. Your vote of confidence made me eager to begin my career. I sought opportunities rather than waiting for opportunities to come to me. Several members showed me how to recognize opportunities and welcomed me into the fold, not as a student, but as a professional. The closer graduation drew, and the more I became involved with the chapter, the more my excitement grew. During my internship, my abilities, confidence, and excitement showed through and I received an offer of permanent employment that closely mirrors the dream job I envisioned more than a decade ago.
I have no idea where my journey as a technical writer will take me, but I know that my rich career will include the STC Lone Star Chapter. For the chapter's scholarship and moral support, I am eternally grateful.
