The joys of being the chapter president include recognizing the superlative efforts of others. This month, joy came with the news that our nominees for Associate Fellow and for Distinguished Chapter Service awards had been approved by the national office.
Our newest Associate Fellow, Jan Shelton:
|
"For service to the Society, and to the membership, especially in the roles of mentor and teacher. For exploring new methods of communication and sharing that know-how with other members of the Society, and for unfailingly giving of herself to help those in search of employment. Jan represents the best of what we are and models that behavior for new members."

Two of our three DCS awards were presented at the February meeting, and the third will be presented in March.
Jim Chambless
|
"For sustained contributions to the Lone Star chapter—for your wisdom, experience, and sound advice." Jim has always been an active voice no matter what the issue. He worked his way through the ranks, eventually becoming chapter president. Jim has a thorough understanding of STC’s history and processes. This experience has played a key role in keeping the Lone Star chapter’s administrative council focused and striving towards the future. Even now as a past-president, he consistently has his eye on the welfare of the organization. His enthusiasm and character have influenced others to participate in the chapter. STC is very fortunate to have him as a member.
Kelly Burch
|
"In recognition of your outstanding effort in redesigning the Lone Star Chapter Web site and bringing it to the professional-level indicative of the Society." Kelly took on the thankless task of redesigning the LSC Web site. In addition to coming up with a useable design, she had to coordinate the input of different ideas and opinions from at least 10 people! It was quite an achievement that she came up with a design that pleased almost everyone in the chapter, with no major objections! She is still working to improve the site by automating areas such as job bank postings and input to the site. Her main goal was to make the LSC Web site indicative of the professional status of our organization. The council and members of LSC feel that Kelly has achieved this goal.
Gail Lippincott
|
"For extraordinary service to our chapter--as a leader, scholar, mentor, and role model." Gail's reputation for exemplary service to the Society for Technical Communication was established long before she joined the Lone Star chapter. While she completed her Ph.D. in technical communication from the University of Minnesota, Gail served as vice president of the Orlando chapter. Orlando colleagues Dan Voss and William Wiese (the current Orlando chapter president) describe her as "phenomenally valuable" and "an absolute mainstay—such a blend of energy, enthusiasm, organization, follow-through, and commitment." Since her arrival in Lone Star territory, where she teaches in the highly regarded technical communication program at the University of North Texas, Gail has extended her contributions at the local, national, and international level. On the local level, we been privileged to observe (and benefit from) Gail's stunning versatility as a writer, organizer, mentor, researcher, judge, and public relations wizard. She regularly brings students and colleagues to our meetings, expanding our talent pool as well as our membership roster. Her recent article in Technical Communication and her work on the STC Special Needs Committee continue to place the Lone Star chapter in the spotlight, while making valuable contributions to the professional development of technical communicators world-wide. Ultimately, Gail's most important contribution to STC—and to our field—has been her extraordinary guidance and encouragement of new technical communicators. Every day, Gail helps people discover and develop their potential. In short, she is helping novices become colleagues who will surely shape the future of our organization and our profession.
