Resumes and the Day of Romance

Knoerzer Stuff

by Michelle Knoerzer

LSC President Michelle KnoerzerValentine's Day has always been a source of stress for me. It started as a child. I always had the dorky box of cards to give away and no candy hearts. And if I thought the formative years were rough, becoming an adult was worse. Will he send flowers? Does he love me? It's February 14th and you don't have a date!

Every year, we get worked into this Hallmark-induced frenzy. I suggest we step back, regain our perspective, and look at the holiday in a different light.

So, what could I possibly suggest that could replace love letters, and a good old fashioned box of Godivas? In this uncertain job climate, my husband and I have decided to dedicate February 14th to updating our resumes.

Tony and I decided early in our relationship not to celebrate this national day of love. (It doesn't seem to matter that we love each other the other 364 days of the year.) Instead of sending chocolates, we focus on an activity that benefits both of us. On our first Valentine's Day together, we refinished a piece of furniture. While the paint may have made us swoon, the completed project gave us something to enjoy the rest of the year.

Embedded GIF align=R File TemplateI will be the first to admit that updating my resume is not one of my favorite activities. However, your resume should be updated every month. By setting aside the time and making the update a priority, you can put yourself ahead of the game. Not to mention, a current resume brings peace of mind.

Why February 14th? Why not?

If you insist on having romance on Valentine's, put your own spin on this activity. A little candlelight, a bottle of wine, while gazing at each other from across the table as you put your best job qualities on paper. Really, there is nothing sexier than a man and woman who can present themselves well on paper.

If you are not currently involved with anyone, gather your friends for a night of resume refurbishing. Make a celebration out of it. What could be better that good food, great company, and knowing your resume is ready to go if you should suddenly need it.

Not only are you one step closer to being prepared for what the rest of the year might bring, but you and your friends/partner have worked together on something that will benefit each of you.

Happy Updating!
