Scholarship News

by Marian Blake

Spring '02 Winners include Brian McCarthy, Louellen Coker, and Melissa PereiraTwice a year, in conjunction with the Fall and Spring semesters, the Lone Star Chapter STC gives scholarships to help defray the expenses of those seeking a college education in Technical Communication. Generally, the bi-annual deadlines for applications to be submitted are November 30 and April 30. In the Fall of 2001 the LSC received an unprecedented number of applicants and responded by awarding 7 scholarships to students around the Lone Star State in January 2002. These include Louise Keeton, Louellen Coker, Melissa Pereira, and Brian McCarthy - who attend UNT; and Whitney Bates, Carrie Janek, and Charlsye Smith - who attend Texas Tech University.

The Lone Star Chapter Council made their selections based on the strength and financial need of each applicant. "This year we had some very impressive, strong candidates," said chapter president Michelle Knoerzer. "We were pleased to be able to award several scholarships for the spring. Given the state of the local economy, we expect the number of applications to continue to go up next fall."

From Carolyn Rude, Director of Technical Communication, Associate Director of Graduate Studies, Department of English, Texas Tech University - "Thanks for helping students such as Carrie. Such gestures of support really make students feel part of the profession. I know that many are borrowing money to get through school."

The Scholarship Committee encourages all students of Technical Communication to apply for scholarships. Even if you are not selected on your first attempt(s), please reapply. The Committee will reconsider you.
